Plant Species in Cabo San Lucas

Cabo San Lucas is a great place to experience new things.  Maybe you want to go on a Cabo snorkeling tour for the first time ever, or perhaps a Cabo fishing tour.  From water to land, Los Cabos has a lot of diversity for a traveler to see.  The water surrounding this town is a combination of the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean.  These waters also have a living coral reef that homes over 800 species of marine species.  Aside from the water, however, the land is also diverse.

Los Cabos not only has a desert, but also Sierra de la Laguna Mountains.  These mountains have over 900 plant species, with over 400 of the species being native to the area.  If you enjoy discovering plants that you’ve never seen before, Los Cabos has many.  Here are some of the popular plants that you can see in Cabo San Lucas.

Cardon Cacti

There are over 120 species of cacti in Baja, but the most popular is the Cardon.  This is also the tallest cactus that you can find here, which can reach a height of 18 meters and a weight of 12 tons, not counting the roots.

Elephant Tree

The elephant tree is part of the sumac family of trees that release a milky sap.  The branches on this tree are covered in a gray-white outer layer which can be peeled back to show its blue-green inner bark.

Conifers

In the high Sierra Mountains, you’ll find a wide variety of conifers.  Some of the main ones you may come across include cypress, cedar, juniper, white fir, and more.

Herbs

The hot, dry climate that Cabo San Lucas has promotes the growth of herbs, which are used for cooking and alternative medicines.  There are many herbs that you can find here, such as white sage and chia, but the most common one is Damiana. This herb can be found in the rocky areas of Baja California, and can be consumed as either tea or liquor.

If you want to see these plants, along with many more, you can do so by walking around Los Cabos, or taking a Cabo ATV tour.  When you take a Cabo ATV tour, you can explore the different terrains of Cabo and see a bigger variety of plant species.
